Here we've provided some quick hints and tips for searching in directories.
The best way to a successful search strategy? Get to know the directory! Look through the preface to determine what variety of information has been collected inside. Next, flip through the index(es). Does the index allow for subject searching? Geographical searching? Searching by an individual's name?
The more familiar you are with the types of directories available, the more successful your search.

Hint: Determine your patron's true information needs.

Tip: Conduct a reference interview! Does your patron really want a statewide telephone directory, or is she looking for information on the California Veterinary Medical Association?

Hint:
Know your directories. Which directory you use will determine the type of information you find.

Tip: What information is your patron hoping to find? A phone number? Perhaps the name of board members, heads of committees, or other staff? Most directories provide a preface which will outline the scope of the directory, and the type of information it contains. The preface will often include a sample entry.

Hint:
Use the index wisely. Your patron has heard through the grapevine that an old friend of hers is a CVMA board member, and would like to contact her.

Tip: Directories employ different types of indexes. In general, the most helpful is a keyword or other topical term index, which allows you to begin a search even when the patron is unsure of other identifying information. In the case of our example patron, she would like the contact information for her friend, and knows she can find her through the CVMA. In this case, you might search through an association directory's personal name index.

Hint:
Know when to go online. The electronic versions of most directories provide much greater detail, more entries, and links to websites and homepages. They are also updated more frequently.

Tip: Online directories provide greater access to information by providing free-text and keyword searching in all fields.
